Event: Water festival

Fountain of life

Drinking water? Comes from the tap, obviously! But what is taken for granted today, at least in our latitudes, was once secured only with great effort. The water experience trail at the Kieke- berg open-air museum illustrates how integral the life-giving moisture was to the rhythm of our ancestors’ daily lives and how it continues to shape our existence today. The purpose of the trail, situated just outside Hamburg, is to raise a broad awareness of the challenges inherent in sustainable water management. Children in particular have an opportunity to become acquainted with the finer points of H2O over the course of the trail’s eight stations. They can splash to their hearts’ content as they learn con- cepts such as water pressure or the action of currents. The river trip or the model of a waste- water treatment facility are of course appealing to adults as well. At the end of the path, the visitors arrive at a water-themed playground – and hopefully at a fuller understanding of the multifaceted concepts introduced along the way.
