Advanced Technology on Wheels: Science Express Celebrates Mountain Festival in Calcutta

04 - 11 Feb 2008 – This week, the Science Express travels the Indian state of West Bengal, making stops in the two cities of Kharagpur and Calcutta (Kolkata). The research train has already completed more than half of the 57 stations on its 15,000-kilometre (9300 mile) journey across the Indian subcontinent.
In the process, it has become a veritable audience magnet: at each station, the multimedia exhibition draws several thousand schoolchildren and students, along with numerous representatives of other age groups and professions. Three months after its launch, the Science Express has already welcomed half a million visitors.

Calcutta is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. With an urban population of approx. 4.6 million makes it the fourth largest city in India; the greater metropolitan region is home to some 15 million people, who form the country’s third-largest conurbation. Calcutta is an industrial city with major traffic hubs. It has several universities and a broad range of cultural offerings including theatres, cinema, museums and galleries. One important sight is the temple in Kalighat, a place of pilgrimage in honour of the Hindu goddess Kali.

The “Science Express” presents a multimedia exhibition which introduces visitors to advanced research and technology in an easily understood manner. The Indo-German science train is a joint project between the Max Planck Society (MPG) and India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST), with the support of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German companies BASF and Bosch. The Science Express concept was developed in coordination with the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative.

The exhibition, consisting of 13 themed railroad wagons, will spend nine months travelling through India, with stops in 57 metropolises and business centres. On view are exhibits and authentic photo and film material from the research institutes of the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Societies and the European Space Agency (ESA).

The “Science Express” is travelling through India to substantiate the concept of “Germany – Land of Ideas”. Under the heading “Research in Germany – Land of Ideas”, it provides a unique stage for the presentation of Germany’s high-tech strategy and Germany as a place of academic study put on by the German Ministry of Research and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The project also seeks to recruit Indian teens and students for a career in science and technology, as shortage of skilled labour is an issue in India as well. The project’s German initiators also hope to encourage more skilled Indian professionals to pursue advanced education at universities and research institutions in Germany.
