Berlin, 31 Mar 2009 – ‘Ideas for Germany’ was the theme of the third annual reception hosted by the ‘Germany - Land of Ideas’ nation-branding initiative with its patron, German President Horst Köhler, in attendance. This year’s venue was the Theater des Westens in Berlin.
The joint initiative by the federal government and German industry used its annual reception to present its commitment to Germany as a location for innovation.
Speaking to around 500 guests from industry, society and politics, President Köhler praised the commitment of ‘Germany - Land of Ideas’.
As part of the event, winners of the nationwide competition ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’ presented their projects in the fields of business, the environment, sport, science, education, culture and society. The initiative has run the competition and the accompanying series of events in collaboration with Deutsche Bank since 2006.
The two keynote speakers Dr. Wulf H. Bernotat, CEO of E.ON AG and Chairman of the initiative’s Board of Trustees, and Prof. Dr. Burkhard Schwenker, CEO of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and a member of the Board of Trustees, focused on "Germany as a Location". The lecture highlighted Germany's innovative potential and its position in Europe, including with regard to the repercussions of the financial crisis.
Jürgen R. Thumann, Chairman of the "Germany - Land of Ideas" Steering committee, stressed that times of economic turbulence have a way of emphasising the importance of the real economy with its innovations for Germany as a place of business and research: "Germany and its products rightfully enjoy the highest standing internationally. The ‘Germany - Land of Ideas’ initiative underscores this with its activities. The initiative’s projects and events successfully present Germany in the world with a clear message. It helps Germany to increasingly see itself as an innovative and viable country."
Jürgen Fitschen, a member of Deutsche Bank’s Group Executive Committee, praised the performance of the ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’ competition winners in particular: "The spotlight is on all those whose expertise and passion make Germany the Land of Ideas. We are proud of this innovative potential and will do our best to support it. When ‘can-do’ attitude and motivation are combined with creative ideas, they reinforce the place where we have our roots."
