Düsseldorf, 04.02.2006. In the middle of February the ‘Green City’ forum in Düsseldorf was honoured as a ‘Selected Landmark in the Land of Ideas’.
The forum was presented with the accolade at Deutsche Bank’s offices by host Dr Heiner Leberling. “As an exclusive sponsor we are promoting the ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’ competition. This is the biggest series of events the country has ever seen,” said Dr Leberling, because it shows “what is hidden within Germany, what Germany can do and how Germany can shape the future through ideas.”

Peter Menke, spokesman for the forum, thanked the locality project ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ for the accolade, which the ‘Green City’ forum particularly appreciated. He explained that it’s all too easy for city and local councils to forget, in times of restricted budgets, that green cities are more peaceful, healthier and more economically successful than concrete jungles. “The ‘Green City’ forum goes to prove the theory that green area facilities and planting street trees are not in any way to be considered as cost factors but as a rewarding investment for the present and the future.”

A similar view was expressed by Charlotte Niess-Mache, joint city councillor of the regional capital of North Rhine Westphalia, who highlighted greenery as the most important factor for localities: “It raises not only the economic value of the property around but also directly leads to an enhanced quality of life for residents and visitors alike.”

As a thank you to the ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ project, and to Deutsche Bank, Peter Menke announced that the forum wanted to donate a tree to all the other 364 competition winners. He went on to explain: “As it’s important to plant the right species of tree in the right locations, tree nurseries, garden and landscaping centres are on hand to provide support right across the country”.
The first tree – a mountain ash – was planted by the forum members in association with the garden office of the City of Düsseldorf.
