E.ON: Performance and dedication

E.ON power plant in Scholven
E.ON knows very well what the achievements of people in Germany are. Everywhere, new ideas are being created, innovations are being developed, people are being creative, researching, teaching, working and demonstrating social commitment. E.ON not only supplies power and gas, one of the main prerequisites for all these activities. The company is actively involved, with performance and dedication, in developing solutions to energy problems that will play a key role in the future: “It is our firm conviction that our actions are ultimately judged by the world that we create for future generations“, says Wulf Bernotat, Chairman of the E.ON Board of Management and the Board of Trustees of the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas“.

E.ON invests in energy efficiency and climate protection and is actively involved in national and international energy technology research projects. Just three examples are outlined below: A unique project, “COMTES700“, a unique project for the development of advanced coal-fired power plants, is currently in progress in North Rhine-Westphalia. The pilot plant is in operation at the Scholven power plant. The “700“ in the project name refers to the steam temperatures of 700°C used at the plant. The high steam temperature boosts efficiency to 50 percent, meaning that the new plant requires almost 30 percent less coal to generate the same quantity of power as a conventional plant. Apart from E.ON, other partners in the project include leading European energy suppliers and four major power plant producers.

Hybrid vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines and electric motors are considered to be especially advanced. They combine high performance, low fuel consumption and maximum environmental compatibility. These are the results of the recovery of braking energy and the use of the most efficient operating range of the internal combustion engine. But even more innovative solutions are available. E.ON is currently testing an automobile that uses natural gas and electricity - with success: The carbon dioxide emissions are some 20 percent below the lowest values obtainable with gasoline engines.

To develop future-oriented solutions and sustainable concepts for energy supply with low impact on the climate, Aachen University and E.ON established a new research institute at the beginning of 2006. At the “E.ON Research Institute for Energy“, the two partners aim to promote research in the fields of energy technology and the energy industry. This co-operation between higher education and industry will allow the university to reinforce its internationally recognised position in energy research, making it even more attractive for students from Germany and other countries. The support of E.ON AG will help Germany to assert its leading position in European research and education.
