Frankfurt Airport City – Vision of a city
For an increasing number of people, flying has become an essential part of everyday life. Airports are regarded as smoothly operating facilities. Passengers expect short waiting times when checking in and out, friendly service, a wide variety of shopping – and without any stress. So what makes airports so exciting in the 21st century?

At Fraport – the company that owns and operates Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Germany‘s largest airport – we look at things a bit differently. When our employees talk about “their“ airport, they do so with open enthusiasm. Frankfurt is one of the world‘s ten biggest airports and can boast impressive figures: more than 52 million passengers per year, 2 million metric tonnes of cargo, and employment for 68,000 people. But what makes this airport really fly is not just pride in the size achieved.
Things start to get really exciting when new ideas come into play – and are implemented consistently. Examples include FRA‘s integrated long-distance train station for Inter-CityExpress (ICE) services, which provides passengers with direct access to the airport via rail. This is convenient and protects the environment. Talking about environmental protection, Fraport has repeatedly been honoured for its excellence in environmental management. With an eye on the future, the company focuses on a comprehensive strategy of sustainable development and accepts its corporate responsibility toward employees, society, and the environment.
Frankfurt Airport is performing successfully and wants to expand further. Plans call for constructing a new landing runway and a third passenger terminal – key elements of Fraport’s €3.4 billion Airport Expansion Programme. Expansion of Frankfurt Airport is a subject of heated discussions by the public. The main issue is aircraft noise. Having learned from such conflicts in the past, Fraport is facing the debate and striving to achieve maximum consensus with the people living in the region. The results of these discussions also influence the vision of the airport in the future: Airport City Frankfurt.
What does this vision look like? Airports serve as vital nodes in the network of the globalised economy. They ensure growth and new jobs. Therefore, Frankfurt Airport will decisively influence the further development of the Frankfurt /Rhine-Main region. FRA’s expansion will create 100,000 new jobs on and off the airport. Furthermore, something cmpletely new could emerge here - something that transforms global mobility into a new form of urban life. In this vision, the polycentric Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region – with its lrger and smaller cities, with its small communities and green areas – is growing tgether into an attractive global location for business, science and technology, and culture. And Frankfurt Airport is emerging as the natural centre of this dynamism.
Indeed, the future looks very exciting. The new century has only just begun. And Germany‘s most important airport will play an increasingly active role in shaping the future.
