At its official foundation day on 1 January 1867, Voith was a locksmith‘s workshop with 30 employees in the Swabian town of Heidenheim. Today, almost 140 years later, Voith still has its headquarters in Heidenheim, but it has grown into one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe.

The number of employees has increased a thousandfold. With over 200 locations worldwide, the Group is leading in its markets paper, energy, mobility and service.

Be it 1867 or 2006 – the “Voithians“ have always been good at innovation. Improving or inventing new techniques and technologies is an important part of the company‘s ongoing success. The first Voith patent was registered by Friedrich Voith as early as 1869: the refiner. With this wood-grinding machine, Voith paved the way to the industrial production of paper.

But Voith‘s innovative spirit reaches far beyond the field of paper production. Since its first patent registration, a further 10,000 have been added to the Voith portfolio, and this figure is currently increasing at a rate of over 400 per year. Recent examples are a fish friendly turbine for hydro power stations, or the Aquatarder for wear-free braking of commercial vehicles with water.

With the construction of the Voith Paper Technology Center in Heidenheim, the world‘s most advanced paper research centre, the company once more gives its backing to its traditional location in Germany. With the Paper Technology Center it will be possible to test and optimise the entire paper making process in advance under realistic conditions – from raw material to end product – for the first time. The Paper Technology Center is one of the selected “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas“ and will be officially inaugurated on 11 May 2006.
