Berlin/Kühlungsborn, 06.06.2007 – Access to clean water in Africa was the focus of speeches given during the first part of the “Power of Ideas” event series. During the two days of the event, 22 speakers will present ideas and innovations tying in to the topics of the G8 summit in Heiligendamm.
The event is hosted by the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative at the International Media Centre in Kühlungsborn, and caters for accredited journalists from all over the world.
“In industrialised nations, the amount of water needed to produce enough meat for a mid-size barbecue party would fill an Olympic-size swimming pool.” Dr. Ulf Bentlage, CEO and co-founder of Geohumus International, introduced the subject of water with this drastic example. His company owns the patents to a granulate which is mixed in with soil to help retain water – a product that could be of particular benefit to the world’s most arid countries.
Michael Schäfer, CEO of Energiebau Solarstromsysteme GmbH, presented a hybrid model for generating electricity from solar power and plants. The Jatropha tree can supply oil for electricity generators, Schäfer explained. These could for instance be used to turn foul water into drinking water. Hans Huber, CEO of Hans Huber AG, presented the required system in his speech. Such a cycle could considerably facilitate access to clean water.
Dr. Franz Josef Radermacher, a mathematician and economist and the founder of the ‘Global Marshall Plan Initiative’, went on to outline the goals of an eco-social market economy. His thesis is that what’s preventing the implementation of a global Marshall Plan is not a lack of money, but a lack of will: “The present system generates the differences we see in the world. The people who profit from it are always the ones who try to convince us that a free, unregulated market would solve the world’s problems. We need global markets that are governed by ecologically and socially sensible rules– like those found in the EU and in all functioning states.”
At the event, Radermacher also commented that it was very wise of everyone involved, including the German government, to offer a programme like ‘The Power of Ideas’ parallel to the G8 summit: “This was an excellent opportunity to present a concept like the ‘Global Marshall Plan’ to an international audience.”
