Convincing Content - “The Power of Ideas“ - The Summit Agenda covered in

Berlin/Kühlungsborn, June 08, 2007 – Africa was the final focus in the lecture series on “The Power of Ideas” held in the media centre of the G8 Summit in Heiligendamm and organised by the initiative “Germany – land of Ideas”.
The ideas and innovations presented in this series reflected the topics covered in the G8 discussions and focused on the same issues. These included the protection of intellectual property, energy efficiency and environmental protection as well as the situation in Africa.

“Set a trap for the product pirates!”, came the call from Prof. Dr. Günther Schuh of the Fraunhofer Institute, in his lecture on the subject of product piracy. He presented a set of tools which would allow firms to protect themselves effectively.

Dr. Thomas Heath, Technical Director at Wavegen, a subsidiary of Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation GmbH, presented an innovation in the power generation sector with the development of power plants using wave energy, “which could supply around 2000 households. There are many islands in Europe, but also around the world which are waiting for us to commission a pilot power plant”, he stated.

Taninga Shope-Linney from the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) explained that Africa is taking responsibility for itself and its development through initiatives by NEPAD and the African Union. NEPAD is an African network for the promotion of political, economic and social development across the entire continent. “Africa, however, cannot do it alone”, stated Shope-Linney. “We need partners to ensure that we reach the millennium goals and that the 21st century marks a turning point for the continent.”

Peter Conze, head of the African department for the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), which supports NEPAD stressed the necessity of placing the continent on the global agenda, saying that, “the focus on Africa at this summit has created a new awareness for Africa.”

Peter Krämer, Managing Director of the Hamburg Shipping Company Marine Service GmbH, represented the UNICEF initiative „Schools for Africa“. He demanded that the second millennium goal, which stipulates a common right to education, be met, stating that, “Access to education for all is the key to solving global problems.”

The presentation of these ideas was met with great interest by journalists from around the world. The International Media Service, provided online for journalists by the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”, was accessed around 2000 times daily during the G8 Summit.
