South Africa 2010: Nation-Branding Initiative Supports ‘Kick It in South Africa’

Berlin/Johannesburg, June 9th – 14th, 2007 – Having already taken a number of measures to support South Africa as it prepares for hosting the 2010 Football World Cup, the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative is now adding another project to the list.
In early June, the German national team players Philipp Lahm and Piotr Trochowski will travel to South Africa as ambassadors of the sport. The “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative will support the three professional football players during their stay.

Commenting on the reasons for his efforts in South Africa, Philipp Lahm said: “My goal is to encounter South Africa, the country, the people, the culture. I want to get a deeper impression because I’m convinced that South Africa is a wonderful country, and it will be a pleasure for us to play the next World Championship here in 2010.”

Apart from official meetings with key political figures and artists, the visit will centre on encounters with the South African people. “Like every sport, football links people and different cultures, as we experienced first-hand during the World Cup in Germany,” said the initiative’s managing director Mike de Vries, explaining the goals of this effort: “We would like to pass on our experience, as we fully realise the importance of such a major event for the host country South Africa.“

During their stay, the national team players will visit future World Cup venues, and practice with young football talent in a township and a school.

South Africa will have the full spotlight and attention of the international public once the European Championships 2008 are over. The three professional footballers, all of whom currently play on German teams, are joining forces with World Vision, the SOS Children’s Villages and the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative to send a positive signal for the 2010 World Cup host country, South Africa.

The nation-branding initiative „Germany – Land of Ideas“

“Germany – Land of Ideas” is a joint nation-branding initiative by the German government and German business, represented by the Federation of German Industries (BDI). Germany’s Federal President Horst Köhler is the patron of the initiative, which aims to convey a positive image of Germany at home and abroad and emphasise the country's strengths as a place of business. The core message of all activities pursued by the nation-branding initiative is “Germany – leading through innovation.”
