Wind and Water: Two ‘Landmarks 2007’ Present Their Ideas

Berlin/Kühlungsborn, 07.06.2007 – Winners of the “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” competition/event series jointly implemented by the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative and Deutsche Bank have an opportunity to give their innovations higher-level exposure.
The founders and CEOs of two ‘Landmarks 2007’ , Dr. Ulf Bentlage of SkySails GmbH, Hamburg and Stefan Wrage of Geohumus GmbH, Frankfurt, are two of the speakers in the “Power of Ideas” lecture series at the G8 summit International Media Centre. The two-day event features 22 experts from business and academe presenting their ideas and innovations on topics tying in to the summit agenda.

Bentlage explained the ‘Pampers Principle’ for water retention to the journalists in attendance. His company owns the worldwide patents to Geohumus, a granular material that works using the same principle as disposable diapers. Bentlage reported that the procedure has already proven very effective in the agricultural sector in Africa.

Stefan Wrage introduced his “Skysails” system, which offers attractive energy savings potential. Whenever wind conditions allow, a towing kite is activated on container ships or large yachts on the high seas, reducing the load on the ship’s main engine. This can cut a ship’s average yearly fuel consumption in half. The “Skysails” principle is already undergoing real-life testing.

“Germany – Land of Ideas” is a joint nation-branding initiative by the German government and German business, represented by the Federation of German Industries (BDI). Germany’s Federal President Horst Köhler is the patron of the initiative, which aims to convey a positive image of Germany at home and abroad and emphasise the country's strengths as a place of business. The core message of all activities pursued by the nation-branding initiative is “Germany – leading through innovation.”

365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas

With Deutsche Bank acting as the exclusive project partner, 365 places in Germany were picked by a panel of VIP judges as “selected landmarks,” in a nationwide contest that is now in its second consecutive year. More than 1,500 innovative businesses, projects, and institutions, along with cultural and social facilities, applied to become a Landmark for 2007. In what has become the country’s biggest event series, one “Landmark 2007” will present itself to the public on each day of the year, thereby demonstrating the wealth of ideas, creativity and dedication inherent in Germany’s population.
