‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ Actively Contributes to the United Nations’ 2nd Internet Governance Forum
Berlin/Rio de Janeiro, 12-15 Nov 2007 – In the days ahead, some 1,200 world-renowned Internet experts will be convening in the Brazilian metropolis upon invitation by the United Nations (UN) and the Brazilian government.
At the 2nd Internet Governance Forum (IGF), representatives from public administration, business and civil society will discuss globally relevant Internet-related topics. The IGF is seen as an innovative platform under the UN umbrella, since its multi-stakeholder approach allows equal participation for all sections of society. The “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative, in cooperation with “Invest in Germany”, has contributed two tangible measures to this year’s IGF:
First, a trade publication entitled “The Power of Ideas: Internet Governance in a Global Multi-Stakeholder Environment” was drawn up under the lead management of Prof. Wolfgang Kleinwächter, an internationally acclaimed German expert in the field. It will be distributed to all conference participants. For this compilation, which also includes a foreword by Nitin Desai, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Internet Governance, 34 international IT experts wrote essays on the main topics covered at the IGF. They include free Internet access and the basic right to freedom of opinion on the Net, Internet security and the continued expansion of Internet infrastructures. Prof. Wolfgang Kleinwächter, Professor of International Communication Policy and Regulation at the University of Aarhus, emphasises the publication’s uniqueness: “The book ‘The Power of Ideas: Internet Governance in a Global Multi-Stakeholder Environment’ ideally reflects the IGF’s multi-stakeholder approach. I am delighted to have contributed to making these essays available to the IGF.”
On the afternoon of 14 Nov 2007, “Invest in Germany – Land of Ideas” offers IGF participants a Best Practice Forum under the heading: “From Knowledge to Business Idea.” The event, which focuses primarily on the changing challenges of starting up companies in the IT sector in a globalized world, will be managed by honorary professor Horst Zuse, son of the computer pioneer Konrad Zuse: “The Best Practice Forum hosted by ‘Invest in Germany – Land of Ideas’ gives international panellists including Suhas Gopinath and Walda Roseman a voice. Coming from various different experience backgrounds, they will report on the organisational, legal and financial challenges facing company founders in the Internet sector.”
Users of the international Media Service may access the IGF publication at the following
