‘Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together’ - 10 Million for Earthquake Victims: Germany Esplanade Ends with Benefit Concert

Berlin/Chongqing, 19 May 2008 – The second Germany Esplanade in the ‘Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together’ event series ended last Saturday in Chongqing with a concert to raise funds for the earthquake victims. Under the heading ‘We Are One Family’, the concert featuring German and Chinese musicians generated some €10 million in aid for victims of the catastrophic earthquake in neighbouring Sichuan Province.
Several thousand visitors on Chaotianmen Square and more than ten million TV viewers watched the four-and-half-hour concert with performances by the Hohner Accordion Ensemble, the pop group Fools Garden, composer Robert Zollitsch, Chongqing’s Ensemble for Traditional Chinese Music, and the Chinese singer Gong Lina.

Dr. Michael Schaefer, German ambassador to China, promised the Chinese Red Cross €1 million in additional aid from the German government. Dr. Martin Brudermüller, BASF board member and representative of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), presented the Chinese Red Cross with donations from business partners in the “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together” series and the German Chamber of Commerce in China, totalling over €200,000 Euro. Chongqing’s German sister city Düsseldorf contributed €50,000. The APA and several individual companies – including BASF, Daimler, Siemens and VW – made additional, separate donations. In total, the concert helped to raise over 10 millions Euros for the victims of the earthquake.

From May 9 to 17, some 100,000 people came to see the Germany Esplanade in Chongqing, a metropolis of millions in southwest China. The event series is Germany’s most extensive presentation abroad to date, and consists of activities in the areas of culture, business, science and education with a focus on ‘urbanisation’.

The “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together” event series is hosted by the Foreign Office in cooperation with the Goethe Institute, which is managing the project, the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), and the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative. The series is under the joint patronage of Germany’s Federal President Horst Köhler and China’s President Hu Jintao, and will make stops in six regional metropolises from 2007 to 2010. The next Germany Esplanade will take place in Canton in autumn 2008.

Detailed information about the event series is posted on the Foreign Office website at
