Frankfurt, 13 January 2006 – On Friday Deutsche Börse was selected a Place in the Land of Ideas for its role in innovating electronic securities trading.
The business community and federal government are using the Germany – Land of Ideas initiative of FC Deutschland GmbH in Berlin to promote Germany as part of the 2006 Football World Cup. One of the campaign’s core projects is the 365 Places in the Land of Ideas competition. A panel of judges selected 365 places from around 1,200 applications received from all over Germany. One place will illustrate Germans’ innovativeness and creativity each day of 2006. Neue Börse is the first of 29 places in the federal state of Hesse to be selected.

Visitors to the Neue Börse in Frankfurt could take advantage of the occasion to learn about everything from the historical origins of stock trading and floor trading to the fully electronic pan-European Xetra trading platform. Against the backdrop of Frankfurt’s changing cityscape, actors accompanied visitors to the different stations. The programme included talks on exchange business and history.

"Deutsche Börse implemented electronic securities trading earlier and more consistently than other European stock markets, thus initiating a paradigm shift," said Rainer Riess, Managing Director of Deutsche Börse. The introduction of the fully electronic Xetra trading platform revolutionised securities trading. According to Riess, “Xetra has enabled Deutsche Börse to reduce transaction costs for all investors and has created greater transparency for all traders.”

Since Xetra first went into operation on 28 November 1997, the number of participants has continued to rise. Today over 300,000 transactions per day are carried out on Xetra during peak times.
