Dr Peter Danckert, Chief Executive of the Parliamentary Sport Commission, Bernd Rauch, acting Chief Executive of the German sports charity, Deutsche Sporthilfe, and Mayor Dr Göttrik Wewer soak up information on the current status of the projects in the ‘Land of Ideas Lounge’ at the sports ball in Frankfurt. Alongside them are Mike de Vries, Managing Director of FC Germany GmbH. In common with many guests, they enjoy having the backdrop of the Reichstag building and the model of a football boot to have a shot of schnapps.

‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ at the sports ball

Berlin, 05.02.2006. At this year’s sports ball on Saturday 4 February in the Festhalle in Frankfurt, the locality project ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ was represented in the form of an info-lounge. ‘Land of Ideas’ used the annual event in aid of the German sports charity, Deutsche Sporthilfe as an opportunity to present its projects and goals to the close to 2,200 guests.
Presented in front of the photo backdrop of the Reichstag building in Berlin was a small-scale version of the Stollenschuhe – studded football boots – sculpture, giving a taster of the planned ‘Walk of Ideas’. From now until the start of the 2006 World Cup, oversized sculptures will be unveiled in prominent places in Berlin to make ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ something tangible and to bring it to life.

Anyone interested was able to watch a film called ‘Welcome to Germany’, in which supermodel Heidi Klum, astronaut and physicist Ulf Merbold and the German football team manager Oliver Bierhoff to name a few, put forward arguments for Germany as a location.

The ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’ project presented itself using a special travel guide. It describes 365 places and events in Germany, which in the competition of the same name were selected from a total of 1,200 entries. On each day of the World Cup year, a Landmark presents itself and its special idea. The travel guide focuses on the potential of the people who have made Germany a land of ideas.

In addition to this, the ‘FanClub Germany’ project also introduced itself and its activities at the info stand, offering ‘Land of Ideas’ armbands for sale at www.land-der-ideen.de. Every single euro generated from the sale of these armbands is donated to the German sports charity Deutsche Sporthilfe.

At the sports ball, journalists were also able to find out more about the media service offered by the locality project. Information is already available on the Internet at www.medienservice.land-der-ideen.de. This includes material for features, interviews and commentary on preliminary reporting – all with Germany as the focus.
