Presentation of the fifth giant sculpture for the “Walk of Ideas” in Berlin:
“Masterpieces of Music” on the Gendarmenmarkt

Berlin, 5 May 2006 - The sculpture entitled “Masterpieces of Music” has been unveiled on Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt as the fifth of altogether six stations in the “Walk of Ideas”.
The sculpture consists of six giant musical notes, and symbolises the works of German composers, many of them world famous, that enthuse music-lovers all over the world. The notes, however, also represent the roughly seven million people in Germany who make music on their own or together with others.

Mike de Vries, the Managing Director of FC Deutschland GmbH, welcomed the large number of guests to this penultimate sculpture unveiling in the “Walk of Ideas”. “All the sculptures so far have shown specific inventions from Germany, but these ‘Masterpieces of Music’ cover whole centuries with a variety of styles. Every single piece of music is a work of art in its own right. Music is international and does not need any interpreters. That is why these six notes, in the immediate vicinity of the concert hall, not only make reference to the history of German music and its protagonists but also symbolise the basic principle that music and song know nothing of national frontiers. It brings nations together – and we will see how it does in the football stadiums, if not before.”

The event was given a musical setting by the saxophone quartet from the Babelberg film orchestra. Rolf von Nordenskjöld, Ulrich Kempendorff, Nico Lohmann and Karola Elßner played a classical suite from the Renaissance and popular pieces from the Brecht-Weill “Threepenny Opera” by Paul Lincke, as well as some of their own compositions.

The “Walk of Ideas” is an invitation to stroll through the centre of Berlin and look at three huge sculptures symbolising the wealth of ideas in Germany. Following the first five unveilings – “The Modern Football Shoe”, “Milestones of Medicine”, “The Automobile”, “Modern Book Printing”, and “Masterpieces of Music” – the sixth and last will finally be presented on 19 May: “The Theory of Relativity”.

Ideas from Germany have also made the production of these sculptures possible. They are all made of the innovative material Neopor® and coated with an entirely new kind of metal lacquer from BASF Coatings.

From the beginning of June onwards, all six sculptures in the “Walk of Ideas” can be controlled and admired in a virtual circular tour. The Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam has developed the software technology and is currently producing video clips presenting the sculptures, embedded in a three-dimensional model of the city of Berlin. The view can look at the complete “Walk of Ideas” and other striking buildings and squares in the city as if from a helicopter. The video clips will be available for downloading from the Internet pages of the campaign and of the Hasso Plattner Institute (www.hpi-web.de).
