Berlin, 14 June 2006 – Today an international audience of approximately 500 guests experienced a world premiere of visionary digital cinema technology at CinemaxX, the ‘Berlinale’ venue at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.
The initiators of the event “New Media and Beyond” were Invest in Germany, the German government’s business location marketing agency, and the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative, which is a joint non-party mounted by the German Government in conjunction with the business community.
Gerhart Maier, managing director of “Invest in Germany”, sums up the cooperation between “Germany - Land of Ideas” and “Invest in Germany” as follows: “We are highlighting the strengths of Germany, one of the world’s prime business and technology locations. The aim of the initiative ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ is to present Germany, at home and abroad, as an innovative, cosmopolitan country fired by great ideas and enthusiasm. Together we are linking these strengths to those German attributes that have a great tradition in international public recognition: the courage to attempt new things and to develop new ideas.”
Mike de Vries, managing director of “Germany – Land of Ideas”, also emphasised his delight that the introduced new digital cinema technology is a strong proof for Germany being a real “Land of Ideas”: “The technology that is being provided to us tonight is a vision of the future and a milestone in the history of digital cinema. It is also the logical consequence, because the thirst for knowledge and the imagination of our creative masterminds are effectively demanding technological progress. I am firmly convinced that in this area we can expect further progression.”
The event gave the audience the opportunity not only to get in touch with future technology but also to enjoy the FIFA World Cup. In the future the football fan will indulge in a wide screen picture with a unique resolution of 5,000 x 2,000 pixels that allows him to see the entire pitch without any point of - view changes or camera pans - almost as if they were right in the stadium. A special show trailer was produced for demonstration purposes just for this evening.
The compression, camera and projection technologies were developed as part of the ‘CineVision2006’ project by researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Circuits, the inventors of MP3, in cooperation with the world-famous cinema technology companies ARRI and Kinoton as well as additional industry partners, like T-Systems.
The event included also a presentation about how upcoming large-scale events will be accompanied and guided by the ‘anytime and anywhere available’ electronic helpers like Smartphones and ubiquitous Internet access in the future.
Therefore the creators of a new intelligent service platform ‘servingo’, introduced a technology which can send 3D game scenes to any mobile phone and offers a large variety of additional new applications for mobile communication and entertainment.
