A World Championship in and for Germany

Aachen/Berlin, 17.08.2006 – The World Equestrian Games 2006, being held in Aachen (20 August to 3 September) will be a World Championship in and for Germany. “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative is an official partner.
“500,000 visitors and 800 athletes from around the globe will be meeting at our tournament venue to enjoy the excitement of the battle for the top places in seven disciplines. And many of them will be taking the opportunity to get to know the region and the rest of Germany,” said Michael Mronz, member and press officer of the games organisation committee. As a matter of course, the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative will be supporting the FEI-WEG 2006 in Aachen as one of the official supplier.

The aim of the initiative, under the patronage of the German President, Horst Köhler, is to present Germany to international visitors as a modern country of inventors with great powers of innovation, a nation of cosmopolitan and friendly people. The initiative is a joint effort of the German government, trade and industry, represented by the Federation of German Industries (BDI), and leading German businesses.

“Germany – Land of Ideas” will be promoting the country and its people with widely differing events in and around tournament venue, at the site of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV). “After all, we will be welcoming 150,000 equestrian sports fans from over 50 different countries,” said Michael Mronz. “And they’ll be having a wonderful party, just like the recent football World Cup.”

This is also Mike de Vries’ opinion, as the managing director of FC Deutschland GmbH: “With the Equestrian Games, we’ll be experiencing another fantastic international sporting event here on our home ground. We are extremely happy to be able to present the initiative again to our equestrian friends in Aachen, so soon after the success of our PR campaign during the football World Cup. I can hardly imagine a better vehicle for generating a positive impression of Germany than the successful sportsmen and sportswomen and their horses starting in Aachen. This is one reason why we are actively supporting the FEI-WEG Aachen 2006.”

Throughout the tournament, the initiative will be represented by the “Land of Ideas” pavilion, located in the WEG village. In addition, the initiative will be host to the official media party on 30 August 2006, under the motto “Germany – Land of Ideas”, with invited media representatives from home and abroad.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, the patron of the Equestrian Games recently emphasised: “Media interest will be colossal, countless TV channels will be reporting from Aachen and portraying an equestrian sports loving and hospitable nation. This is also of prime importance for Germany as a business location.” The visitors will be bringing 230 million euros of spending power to the region and 1300 journalists will be there too. Equestrian sport has long been a significant economic factor in Germany, and generates annual revenues of around 5 billion euros, horses from the “Land of Ideas” are a worldwide export success.

The World Equestrian Games, Aachen 2006 are the second largest sporting event held in Germany within the last 10 years. A total of 16 World Championship titles will be awarded in seven disciplines –jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining.

About “Germany - Land of Ideas”

“Germany – Land of Ideas“ is a joint location initiative of the Federal Government and German industry, represented by the Federation of German Industry (BDI). The aim of the initiative is to portray Germany, at home and abroad, as an innovative, cosmopolitan and enthusiastic country. The patron of the initiative is the German President Horst Köhler.
