Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Michael Glos Opens ‘100 Minds of Tomorrow – The Future in the Land of Ideas’ Exhibition in Vienna

Vienna/Berlin, Nov 16, 2006 – Michael Glos, Germany’s Federal Minister for Business and Technology, today opened the “100 Minds of Tomorrow – The Future in the Land of Ideas” exhibition at the Austrian National Library on Josefsplatz in Vienna.
Until now, the travelling exhibition developed by the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative was on view in Berlin. It has travelled to Austria on the occasion of the German Chamber of Trade’s general assembly in Vienna.

The exhibition consists of life-size steles depicting 100 up-and-coming young talents from a wide range of societal sectors, who represent the next generation, in this case Germany’s. Their representatives are cosmopolitans who are guided by their visions and achievements, and who put their ideas into practice all over the world. They include entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and athletes, some who have already arrived and others whose day still lies ahead – all of them creative, curious and courageous representatives of the generation that will inherit the future. Two of the protagonists in question – rap poet Bas Böttcher and violinist Jana Kuss – presented their skills to the German Chamber of Trade’s roughly 400 members and guests in a live performance.

In a ceremonial address under the heading “Germany – Land of Ideas,” Minister Glos emphasized that every country must cultivate its young creative elite. With reference to “100 Minds of tomorrow” he said: “If we succeed in bringing together the various types of potential they represent, supporting them and given them a shared platform, then we will be cultivating our elite in the best possible sense of the phrase.” In this connection, Glos referred to “Exist - Existenzgründungen aus der Wissenschaft” (Exist – Building a Business from the Scientific Sector), an initiative by the German government in cooperation with universities that seeks to encourage a culture of business founders, “in order to translate research results into economic value creation and sustainable jobs for the future.” One goal of the government’s new “High-Tech Strategy for Germany” scheme is to lastingly improve the conditions for high-tech start-ups and innovative SMEs, by activating entrepreneurial thought and action.

Albert Hochleitner, President of Germany’s Chamber of Trade, took a similar line: “We seek to build bridges between theory and practice, giving academics and scientists the necessary real-life perspectives. Our goal is to promote the exchange of ideas. Education must no longer be understood as a one-dimensional process. The many successful biographies portrayed in the ‘100 Minds of tomorrow’ exhibition prove the validity of this thesis.”
