Federal President Confirms His Patronage of ‘Germany – Land of Ideas”
Berlin, Dec 05, 2006 – Germany’s Federal President Horst Köhler has confirmed his continued patronage of the “Germany – Land of Ideas” nation branding initiative.
At a reception hosted by the initiative at Berlin’s Museum of Communications, which was attended by numerous representatives of the “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” of 2006, the Federal President thanked everyone involved for their dedication: “I greatly welcome the government and the business community’s decision to continue the campaign and the ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’ event series. I would like to continue contributing to their success with my patronage,” said Köhler in his welcome speech.
BDI President Jürgen R. Thumann, who chairs the initiative’s Board of Advisors, explained why Germany’s government and businesses are continuing the initiative: “‘Germany - Land of Ideas’ owes its success partly to an unprecedented model of public-private partnership. We have now set up a non-profit governing organisation to continue the initiative. Our goal is to bring together all the important institutions that help to shape Germany’s image with companies that wish to do their part for Germany. In other words, the organisation will serve a key intermediary function in the management of Germany’s location marketing.”
One project that reflects the country’s progressiveness and inventive spirit on a daily basis is Germany’s biggest event series, “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas.” The project enters its second round in 2007 and will once again be realised in a joint effort between the nation-branding initiative and its exclusive project partner, Deutsche Bank. More than 1,500 public and private institutions, associations, societies and initiatives throughout Germany have applied to become a “Landmark 2007.” The winners were first presented to the public at the reception.
Deutsche Bank’s Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Tessen von Heydebreck remarked: “As the ‘German Bank,’ we are pleased to have specifically contributed to a changing awareness in our country and to changing Germany’s image in the world with our exclusive support of the ‘365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas’. Now the task at hand is to go the rest of the distance by asserting what we have achieved to date on a broader scale.”
Prof. Dr. Martin Roth, Director General of the Dresden State Art Collections and chairman of the “365 Landmarks” panel of judges, expressed his awe at the response to the call for entries: “In 2005 we had 1,200 entries, this year 1,500, all of them at a high level of quality. The number alone shows the potential Germany holds in terms of innovation and inventiveness, which the event series accordingly pays tribute to.”
In closing, Mike de Vries, CEO of the Land of Ideas, emphasized: “We have developed a viable concept for the initiative. Its real strength lies in providing a broad platform for identification and integration. The idea is to continue contributing to a positive image of Germany, both within the country and internationally, with intelligent projects.”
