The presentation was part of a press trip hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of Germany’s EU Council Presidency. This year, “Germany – Land of Ideas” will focus part of its location marketing on the specific topics covered during the EU Council Presidency. In environmental policy, the emphasis is among other things on “Climate and Energy” and
“Sustainable Mobility.” The CEP project - a Public-Private Partnership between Germany’s federal government and eleven international companies – serves as an example for Germany’s commitment to research in the field of sustainable mobility.
The event centred on hydrogen as an environmentally friendly energy source: The 70 journalists were driven in BVG (Berlin Municipal Transport Services) hydrogen buses to the hydrogen fuelling station in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where
representatives of the companies in the CEP gave them some background information on the project and on hydrogen technology and its applications.
The Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, one of the sponsors of the project, was represented by Parliamentary State Secretary Karin Roth: “We need sensible alternatives to conventional energy supply, to keep mobility and housing
affordable. At the same time, this area of research opens up a wealth of approaches for technological innovations to enhance the leading position and competitiveness of German industry. Ready-to-use products are already in use today. Hydrogen busses like those used by Berlin’s municipal transport services, or the CEP’s fleet of fuel cell- and hydrogen cars, provide valuable insights for further technological evolution.”
The Initiators
The Clean Energy Partnership is an international consortium of eleven companies in the automobile, power, and mass passenger transport industries. Its mission is to make hydrogen power technologically available and test it for its everyday use
and system suitability. The CEP in Berlin is one of Europe’s major demonstration projects on sustainable mobility – and one of the biggest anywhere in the world.
The companies who have joined forces in the CEP to work on future mobility include Aral, BMW, the BVG, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM/Opel, Hydro, Linde, TOTAL, Vattenfall Europe and Volkswagen AG.
