Berlin, 22/6/06 – Dr. Theo Sommer, Editor-at-Large for the weekly newspaper ‘Die Zeit’ and the deputy government spokesman Dr. Thomas Steg today presented the English-language version of the book ‘My Idea of the Land of Ideas – How the World Sees Germany’, together with Mike de Vries, manager of FC Deutschland GmbH.
The launch took place in the International Club of the Federal Foreign Office. The collection of essays edited by Dr. Theo Sommer is a joint initiative of ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ and the weekly newspaper ‘Die Zeit’. Sommer was pleased about the successful completion of the book. “In their texts, 44 foreign authors paint a colourful, nuance-rich picture of Germany – partly outright admiring, partly extremely critical, but overall very encouraging for Germany.”
The authors range from the Swedish author Henning Mankell to the prime minister of Luxembourg Jean-Claude Juncker and the American conductor Kent Nagano. Two authors were invited to the book launch as special guests – Prof. Dr. Susan Neiman, director of the Einstein Forum, and Dr. Nils Morten Udgaard, head of Foreign Affairs for the leading Norwegian daily newspaper ‘Aftenposten’, who discussed their view of Germany with the guests.
In the book, Susan Neiman illustrates her image of Germany with a comparison: “In London the bourgeoisie spend their evenings at the theatre, in Berlin, however, they are more likely to be found at a reading, because in Germany a certain knowledge of contemporary theories is simply considered good form.” Nils Morten Udgaard, on the other hand, draws on a historically significant turning point in his text about Germany: ‘In the decisive months between 1989 and 1990, Germany’s politicians demonstrated prudence and diplomatic skills that even Bismarck himself would have approved of.’
The English edition of the collection of essays is now available for €7.00 including postage and packing at the
online shop of the initiative ‘Deutschland – Land of Ideas’. Journalists can receive a free review copy on request.
