German Chancellor Angela Merkel Endorses TectoYou., a New Initiative by HANNOVER MESSE and “Germany – Land of Ideas”
Berlin, 09.02.2007 - German chancellor Angela Merkel supports the new TectoYou. Initiative called into being by “Germany – Land of Ideas” and the Deutsche Messe AG.
The chancellor herself had provided the original idea for the technology recruitment initiative at the HANNOVER MESSE 2006. Jürgen R. Thumann, President of the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) and Chairman of the “Germany – Land of Ideas” steering committee, joined Sepp D. Heckmann, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG, at the Federal Chancellery to present an update on the progress made on TectoYou. Apart from the BDI, a number of other institutions, associations and businesses have signed up as partners and are supporting the project with their own activities. Germany’s Federal Minister for Education and Research, Dr. Annette Schavan, has agreed to act as its patron.
TectoYou. was initiated in light of the fact that fewer and fewer young Germans are pursuing careers in technology these days. As a result, companies are running out of young talent, and young adults forfeit a possible career opportunity. The new TectoYou. initiative seeks to counteract this trend with a youth-friendly information and action programme. The initiators have made it their mission to point up careers and future prospects in the technology sector and restore their appeal for teens.
As the world’s largest technology industry trade show, the HANNOVER MESSE 2007 offers the perfect setting. More than 6,000 international industrial companies and institutions come here to exhibit their innovations, which at the same time demonstrate the topics and content of a wide range of technology professions. However, youngsters require an understandable, contemporary and motivating introduction to complex technology– which is exactly what the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative and Deutsche Messe AG seek to achieve with TectoYou.
“The HANNOVER MESSE is the marketplace for technology. No platform could be better for presenting the TectoYou project. By teaming up with the ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ nation-branding initiative, Deutsche Messe has a partner at its side that is committed to Germany as a place of investment, and to its future viability. The BDI and the federal government jointly support the TectoYou. project in their capacity as sponsors of the initiative. As a potential employer, the German business sector has the important mandate of introducing young people to the rapidly changing requirements in the technology sector. A higher demand for traineeships and internships strengthens the German SME sector, promotes our country’s economic stability and carries this message forth beyond our borders. This ensures that the stage is properly set for the future for the next generation as well,” explained Jürgen R. Thumann.
The “Festival of Technology” will be the highlight of the TectoYou. launch at the HANNOVER MESSE 2007 (Apr 16 - 20, 2007). Special guided tours will lead young participants to selected exhibition areas at the trade show, and put them in direct contact with the representatives of industrial companies. In the afternoon, the festival concludes with the “TectoYou. Starclub,” which includes a promotion programme and live music.
TectoYou. also caters to “Young Professionals,” i.e. recent graduates looking to enter the job market. Interesting options here include a visit to the “Job & Career Market,” where universities and research institutes present “tomorrow’s” industrial technology under the heading “Research & Technology.”
